The Phase Space Signature

Personality as a living system that settles into a shape. Your traits are the attractor it orbits, your bonds set whether that orbit is calm or chaotic, and your drives are its charge. Play with it, then read how it works.

Build a person

Pick a sample or move the dials. BIS/BAS is the charge (gold approach, teal threat).

The idea

You are a basin of attraction

In dynamical-systems thinking, a personality is not a fixed point on a chart, it is a system that moves and keeps returning to the same shape. That recurring shape is an attractor, and the pull that keeps bringing you back to it is your basin of attraction. The same idea runs through Kurt Lewin's life-space and modern complex-systems models of personality: behaviour is a trajectory, and character is the stable pattern that trajectory keeps tracing.

Honest from the start. This is a visual metaphor for how the frameworks layer, not a claim that personality is a literal physical system. The scores are validated; the way they are combined is designed and calibrated, not yet validated. A psychologist signs off before any public personality claim.

How each outcome is drawn

Five frameworks, one moving system

HEXACO
The shape of the attractor orbit itself. Each of the six factors pushes the orbit out along its own direction, so the loop you trace is the maths of your traits.
BIS / BAS
The charge and energy of the system. Gold when approach (BAS) leads, teal when threat (BIS) leads. Approach gives a wider, warmer orbit, threat a tighter, cooler one.
Attachment
The stability of the orbit. Secure is one clean limit cycle. Anxiety multiplies it into overlapping, chaotic loops (a strange attractor). Avoidance collapses it inward toward a withdrawn fixed point.
Schwartz values
The fixed points the orbit circles, what you keep returning to, placed at their position on the value circle.
SDT needs
The depth of the basin behind the orbit. Met needs deepen and brighten the well that holds the system together; frustrated needs leave it shallow.
How it is built

From scores to a system

  1. The six HEXACO scores set the radii of a closed trajectory, that is the attractor.
  2. Net drive (BAS minus BIS) sets the charge colour and expands or contracts the orbit.
  3. Attachment reshapes the orbit's stability: one loop, many chaotic loops, or a collapse to a point.
  4. The strongest values become fixed points the orbit circles; the three needs draw the basin field behind it.
  5. Same scores always trace the same system, so the signature is deterministic.
Honesty and limits

What this is, and is not

A metaphor for how the layers combine, not biology and not a clinical tool. Results are tendencies, not limits. The exact link strengths are calibrated from the literature and need a validation pilot and a psychologist's sign-off before any public claim. The shareable image should be drawn from bands, not exact scores.
